Introduction

This year, our foundations continued to directly respond to the pandemic, and many shifted or deepened their focus to address the social determinants of health.

CommonSpirit foundations support programs and services that create a healthier future for all.

COVID-19 reminded the world of a truism known in community health for a very long time: that we are only as safe and healthy as the most vulnerable among us are safe and healthy.

Impact

The dollars and cents of serving the common good through philanthropy.

FY2021 Fundraising revenue
$285 million

This year, the 80-plus foundations of CommonSpirit Health came together across the United States to realize the power of convening and catalyzing philanthropists on an unprecedented scale in our communities. As you will see in this report, the results have been inspiring.

Donors
60,000

CommonSpirit Health's philanthropy work aims to build healthy communities. Donors across the nation bolster innovation, bring together communities and serve the vulnerable. Together we accomplish what none of us could do alone.

Transfers
$170.5 million

Transfers made by philanthropy to supported entities show collaboration as monies are transferred only after the obligations of donor intent have been met. Transfers also illustrate deep alignment between local care facility leadership and local fundraising entity leadership.

Return on investment
$4.84

Philanthropy is about more than seeking donations. It’s a powerful investment strategy that our boards and health care leaders use to generate funding for our hospitals, patients and communities. The return-on-investment for a dollar given to the philanthropic effort of CommonSpirit Health is nearly $5:1, meaning that when our leaders invest a $1 in philanthropy, our teams return $5 to support the ministry. We are a not-for-profit organization, where your support makes a tremendous impact for those we serve.
